Ikuti Langkah-langkah berikut:
1.   Hubungkan terminal atau PC anda dengan Cisco router menggunakan port console, menggunakan aplikasi terminal emulation seperti hyperterminal. Pastikan setingan terminal emulation anda sbb:

• 9600 baud rate
• No parity
• 8 data bits
• 1 stop bit
• No flow control

2.   Bila anda sudah bisa mengakses router, ketikkan show version pada prompt, dan catat setingan configuration register
Catatan:  configuration register biasanya memiliki nilai 0x2102 atau 0x102. Bila anda gagal terhubung ke router (mungkin disebabkan login yang hilang atau authentikasi yang menggunakan TACACS), anda dapat mengasumsikan bahwa configuration register router tersebut bernilai 0x2102

3.   Gunakan power switch untuk mematikan router, kemudian hidupkan kembali.

4.   Tekan tombol Break pada keyboard terminal/PC anda dalam waktu 60 detik setelah router dihidupkan kembali, agar router berada pada posisi ROMMON.

Untuk beberapa kasus, dimana tombol Break tidak dapat digunakan/berfungsi seperti yang disebutkan di atas, silahkan cek dokumentasi You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login untuk kombinasi lain dari tombol keyboard untuk keperluan ini.
 
5.   Ketik confreg 0x2142 pada prompt rommon 1> booting dari Flash.
Langkah ini akan mem-bypass startup configuration dimana password disimpan.

6.   Ketik reset pada prompt rommon 2>.
Router akan reboot, tetapi akan mengabaikan konfigurasi yang tersimpan

7.   Ketikkan no pada setiap pertanyaan, atau cukup tekan Ctrl-C untuk mengabaikan prosedur setup awal.

8.   Ketik enable pada prompt Router>.
Seharusnya anda sudah berada pada mode “enable”, dan tampilan di layar anda adalah prompt Router#.

9.   Ketik configure memoryatau copy startup-config running-config untuk menyalin nonvolatile RAM (NVRAM) ke dalam memori.

Penting: Jangan mengetikkan copy running-config startup-config atau write. Perintah-perintah ini akan menghapus konfigurasi startup.

10.   Ketik show running-config.
Perintah show running-config akan menampilkan konfigurasi dari router yang eksisting. Terlihat pada konfigurasi tersebut semua interface berada dalam kondisi shutdown. Sebagai tambahan, semua password (password enable, enable secret, vty, password console) muncul dalam tampilan terenkripsi atau tidak terenkripsi. Password yang tidak terenkripsi dapat digunakan kembali, untuk password yang terenkripsi, anda harus merubah password tersebut.

11.   Ketik configure terminal.
Di layar akan muncul prompt hostname(config)#

12.   Ketik enable secret <password> untuk merubah password enable secret. Sebagai contoh:
hostname(config)#enable secret cisco

13.   Ketikkan perintah no shutdown untuk setiap interface yang hendak anda gunakan.

Bila anda mengetikkan perintah show ip interface brief, semua interface yang hendak anda gunakan, seharusnya ditampilkan dengan status up up.

14.   Ketik config-register <configuration_register_setting>. Dimana configuration_register_setting adalah nilai yang sudah anda catat pada langkah ke-2 atau 0x2102 . Sebagai contoh:
hostname(config)#config-register 0x2102

15.   Tekan Ctrl-z atau end untuk keluar dari mode konfigurasi.
Anda akan kembali ke prompt hostname#.

16.   Ketik write memory atau copy running-config startup-config untuk menyimpan perubahan yang dilakukan.

Contoh dari prosedur “Recovery Password”
Contoh dibawah ini dilakukan pada Router Cisco 2600 Series. Walaupun anda tidak menggunakan Cisco Router dengan seri yang sama, output dibawah ini bisa mewakili contoh dari apa yang akan anda temukan bila anda mengikuti prosedur ini.
